There are always lots of questions that people want to know about Geoids whether it’s about membership, auditions, rehearsals, getting involved backstage or the productions themselves.- this is particularly true if you're new to the society and are thinking about joining us.
So, in an effort to give you as much information as quickly as possibly, here are a few of our favourite FAQs.
If we've missed anything you're dying to know then get in touch!
Yes. To be involved with a show, or to take part in our many social activities, you have to be a member of the society. At just £15 a year this is extremely good value and will keep you busy and out of mischief!
In addition to the membership fee anyone cast in a Geoids production will be required to pay a show subscription to contribute towards the cost of reharsals andstaging the production.
This depends on the role you want to play. If you’re happy being in the ensemble then you must be able to sing in tune and move well (and you mauy still get a small speaking part). There’s strong competition for the main parts and the best performer for the role will always get the part, regardless of previous experience or length of Geoids membership.
For our main show, auditions are always held for those wanting to take a principal role (which can be acting or dancing - or both). We don't audition for ensemble members.
Anywhere from 18 to 70+. The most important thing is that we all like to sing, have a good time and make exciting and entertaining theatre.
All major productions start with a 'Launch Party' for people to get to know the show and acquaint themselves with the style of the production.
At the audition itself, you’ll start by learning a dance routine that is then performed in small groups in front of the other auditionees (don’t worry, it’s very simple!) before the individual singing auditions take place in private. At this point you will be told if you are required for dialogue work.
Casting decisions are sometimes made immediately, but always within a days - all auditionees will be notified whether they have been successful or not.
Everything! In the past few years we have performed shows by Stephen Sondheim, Cy Coleman, Frank Loesser, Julian Slade, the Heather Brothers, Gilbert and Sullivan, Sandy Wilson, George Gershwin and Jerry Block and Sheldon Harnick. Not to mention pantomimes and musicals written by Geoids members!

Wherever we can find a suitable venue. We were based at the Network Theatre in Waterloo for many years but by 2005 it had become to small for our growing audience base and production needs.
In the last few years we have performed at The Steiner Theatre, The London Oratory School Theatre, Questor's Studio and St. Gabriel's Hall. However, we are always looking for new spaces, so if you know of a likely candidate . . .
We currently rehearse our spring and Christmas productions on Friday evenings from 6.30pm - 9.30pm with a few Saturday or Sundays thrown in (usually one a month). Principals may also be called for extra rehearsals. The entire cast is usually called to all rehearsals as we have the space to work on a variety of scenes at the same time.
Yes - in the past we've charged £50 to appear in summer concerts, £85 for autumn and £100 for a main spring show (our upcoming 48-hour musical will be much less than £50!). We are constantly looking at ways to reduce fees (and have held them at current levels for over 5 years), but rehearsing and performing in Central London doesn’t come cheap!
If you want to join in but would find it difficult to pay the participation fee we do ask that you speak to one of the committee as soon as possible as we may be able to come to some arrangement.
Anyone you have sold tickets to - friends, family and colleagues! We have a growing audience base of past performers and supporters that come and see all of our shows, but we really do rely on cast members to help sell tickets.
We advertise and market our productions via fliers, posters, emails and online campaigns and although we get some random strangers (who often keep coming back for more!) they unfortunately don’t fil upl the theatre every night.
We're always on the look out for new people to join our various production teams and are continually planning our next seasons, so, use the online form to tell us your thoughts and let's take it from there.
Who knows, it could be you putting on the next show just like Mickey and Judy - just not in a barn!Is there anything we've missed? Then get in touch and we'll be pleased to answer all your questions. Who knows, it may even make it onto the FAQ list!
